The Cambodia Rice Federation opened its annual rice festival yesterday with a competition to find the country’s best rice, with Prime Minister Hun Sen scheduled to address the forum today.

The three-day festival, the fifth time it is being organised by the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF), gave out three awards in different categories, with the announcement of two other awards to be made by Hun Sen today. The competition was a way to push farmers and millers to increase the quality of rice produced in the Kingdom, said Sok Puthyvuth, president of the CRF.

“Based on this competition, the federation will know where the best rice is grown and farmers and associations can study and learn more about the technique used across the country,” Puthyvuth said.

The Battambang-based agricultural community of Sangha Phal was awarded the best paddy in the Kingdom, with its representative Nov Sopheap saying the 200 farmers who make up the community will now look to expand its operations and use better growing techniques.

“With the prize, we will expand membership and land that is farmed to produce more rice. We will also provide technical assistance to people to get access to good seeds,” Sopheap said.

Chan Pech, general manager of Cambodian rice miller Signatures of Asia, which won best parboiled rice, said his product was popular in the European Union, where it was appreciated for its quality.

“It makes us proud that Cambodia can produce the best quality of rice, like India or Pakistan. The prize will encourage us to strengthen the quality going forward,” he added.

Cambodia’s biggest rice exporter, Amru Rice, was awarded for having the best quality long grain white rice, while the remaining two awards will be for fragrant and jasmine rice. Over the next two days, the meeting will conduct sessions with technical experts looking to improve productivity and access to finance, as well has have panel discussions with government officials and the private sector.

Police have apprehended a third suspect in the case of the suspected rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Kampot province, and have also found what they believe to be a second murder weapon.

Last Monday evening, victim Khun Nay disappeared in the Lboeuk commune of Chhouk district. On Wednesday at 6am, her mutilated corpse was found by her elder sister in a rice field a few hundred metres from her house, with grotesque injuries to her neck and face.

The first suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was brought in by police that day for questioning. Two days later police in Phnom Penh apprehended a second teenage suspect. According to Kampot deputy police chief Sau Kimoeun, both boys have been released.

The new suspect, identified as 24-year-old San No, was arrested on Saturday at 9am. He was found inside his house, located only 15 metres from the victim’s residence, where he lives with his wife and child, according to Lboeuk commune police chief Min Phal.

Phal said Kampot police had told him that they were “almost 100 per cent sure” this suspect was the killer.

Though the suspect has denied killing the girl, investigators found “blood on his collar and some scratches on his face and neck”, said Kampot deputy police chief Kimoeun.

“We will send him to the provincial court on Monday to charge him with rape and murder,” he added.

According to Lboeuk commune police chief Phal, villagers told investigators that they had witnessed the suspect involved in an argument with the victim on the night of her disappearance in which the victim allegedly remarked that the suspect had “an ugly face; no one loves you”, to which the suspect allegedly replied, “Wait and see.”

A fisherman who was out in the rice field that night told investigators that around 8pm he heard a ruffling in the distance. When he pointed his torch towards the noise, he saw a man running from a woman lying down in the brush. He thought he was witnessing a pair of hiding, spooked lovers, he said.

James McCabe, director of the Phnom Penh-based Child Protection Unit, which has been assisting Kampot police in the investigation, said that a new suspected weapon found at the crime scene on Saturday, a 10-centimetre wooden plank, had been ripped off from the suspect’s own fence. “It fit like a glove” on the fence, he said.

Another suspected weapon, a bloodied palm frond, had been found on Wednesday.

The blood found on the new suspect’s clothes would be sent to Vietnam for DNA testing, he added.

The Ministry of Labour on Saturday issued a 12-point set of standards for recruitment agencies sending workers abroad, warning operators they have just over a month to comply.

The directive, issued by Minister of Labour Ith Samheng, is part of the government’s efforts to improve safety for migrants, particularly domestic workers, after a four-year ban on sending maids to Malaysia prompted by numerous reports of abuse was lifted in December.

“The Ministry of Labour will take legal action against all recruitment companies starting from March 1 if they do not obey the ministry’s principles, which are to ensure the safety of workers sent abroad,” Samheng warned in the letter.

According to the standards, recruitment agencies, which have been at the centre of many accusations of mistreatment, now must be registered with authorities, prove they have an office, a clear address, working telephone contacts and staff.

Further, firms must seek permission from the ministry to advertise their services, keep records of workers sent abroad and sign and obey contracts with their clients, including not sending workers to different places than listed in their agreement, which had been among the grievances levelled by those duped by dodgy brokers.

The companies must also pay into the National Social Security Fund, provide a building for training workers and a safe, hygienic place for trainees to live and must have a permanent representative stationed in their clients’ destination country.

The director of the recruitment firm Top Manpower, An Bun Hak, said his company already complied with the regulations and would offer comprehensive training to maids before they were sent to Malaysia.

The Ministry of Labour has established a working group with Malaysian authorities to implement the memorandum of understanding, signed in December, which lifted the ban and flagged new controls to monitor the welfare of Cambodian maids in Malaysia, where the government estimates 8,000 Cambodians continue to work.

The legal flow of domestic workers back to Malaysia is expected to start around the middle of this year, though many have travelled there illegally in recent years, suffering abuse with few legal protections to fall back on.

Chan Pheakdey, who worked as a maid in Malaysia before being rescued from an abusive employer, yesterday recalled her dealings with the broker who sent her abroad and failed to help when things went wrong.

“My employer did not pay my salary; my family went to the company’s office but they had moved and not left a contact. It was very difficult,” she said.

Two Cambodian environmental activists were reportedly detained by Lao authorities yesterday while photographing construction of the Don Sahong dam near the border with Cambodia’s Stung Treng province.

According to Se Seamdy, the leader of Youth for Social and Environmental Protection, the organisation to which the two activists belong, brothers Chum Huor and Chum Huot were on a boat with two other people when they were arrested and questioned for over an hour before being released.

“One of them got sick because he was so afraid,” he said.

While Seamdy denied media reports that the phones and cameras carried by the brothers had been destroyed by Lao authorities, Adhoc provincial coordinator Hou Sam Ol said yesterday that the devices had sustained water damage and were no longer functional. Seamdy declined to elaborate further on the circumstances of the detention, while Sam Ol said he had been told “that their phones dropped into the water, but it is not clear what caused that”.

In social media posts Huor and Huot appear carrying campaign banners that read “Together protect the environment”, and “Having Don Sahong means there is no dolphins”, referring to the endangered Irrawaddy river dolphins that inhabit stretches of the Mekong in Cambodia, and which experts warn may be eradicated by the dam’s construction.

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) – the international body responsible for mediating disputes over the Don Sahong between Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia – has lost more than half of its funding for 2016-2020 compared with the last five years. What’s more, repeated requests to the Lao government for environmental impact assessments and scientific studies on the consequences of the Don Sahong through the MRC have been denied as the commission requires the consent of the Lao government.

Several studies have predicted significant losses in fish populations if the dam construction, which began in late 2015, moves forward. According to research presented in October at the Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy in Phnom Penh, the Kingdom may lose up to 100 per cent of its migratory fish population as a result of Mekong river dam projects in Lao and Cambodia such as the Don Sahong.

Neither the Cambodian embassy in Laos nor a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could be reached for comment yesterday.

Mom Saroeun, Stung Treng provincial governor, speaking yesterday, said he was unaware of the incident.

Timber burned at Mondulkiri ELC

Hundreds of logs of timber, including luxury wood, as well as sawmill camps were torched at a controversial Vietnamese-owned economic land concession in Mondulkiri province’s Keo Seima district in an apparent bid to destroy evidence of illegal logging ahead of a raid by a new anti-logging committee.

Eng Hy, spokesman for the joint committee – formed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on January 14 to crack down on illegal logging and timber smuggling to Vietnam – said the team was investigating after inspectors found charred logs at the rubber concession of Binh Phuoc Kratie Rubber 1, a subsidiary of the Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG).

“The burning down of timber did happen … Whether it was to destroy evidence or not, it is a crime,” Hy said, adding he had yet to receive a report from his men on the ground and could not talk in detail about the case.

“If it is the case that they tried to destroy evidence, we can use both the Forestry Law and the Criminal Code [to prosecute] but we do not know yet who set the fire.”

According to nearby residents of Sre Chhouk commune, which is home to mostly ethnic Phnong villagers locked in a long-running land dispute with the company, the burning of timber at the 5100-hectare concession started last week, though smoke from fires could still be seen yesterday night.

“They burned on the land of Binh Phuoc 1 a few days ago; when they could not hide [the wood] in time, they burned it,” said a 32-year-old Phnong villager, who declined to be named as residents had allegedly been threatened by the company, which could not be reached yesterday.

The stockpiles included luxury wood such as beng and thnong, which, for logs of larger diameter, can fetch up to $4,000 per cubic metre if sold across the Vietnamese border, according to an NGO Forum report.

Sok Rotha, Mondulkiri provincial coordinator for the rights group Adhoc, said several different stockpiles were set alight prior to the committee’s arrival.

“Hundreds of pieces of timber were burnt,” Rotha said, calling it an brazen attempt to conceal illegal logging that showed timber barons were “not afraid” of the government’s renewed push against the trade.

“The community network was banned from entering the sites where timber stockpiles were burned, they were strictly guarded. It is impossible that an outsider could have set the fire. It may have been the owner who burned the timber.”

Nearby communities have long accused the company of using its concession to launder illegal wood felled outside its boundaries and say wealthy businessman Seong Sam Ol – who along with tycoon Lim Bunna, has been named by the government as the crackdown’s prime target – is the timber’s buyer.

Yesterday, another community member, 38, said much of the timber held at the site came from outside the ELC, and included many resin trees logged from his community.

“I witnessed fires at three locations with over 60 pieces; each stockpile had between 20 and 30 logs, which belonged to Oknha Ol,” he said, referring to Sam Ol by an honorific title reserved for businessmen who donate more than $100,000 to the government. “They set fire to it themselves. They wanted to damage the evidence.”

Sam Ol could not be reached yesterday.

A 2013 report by the NGO Forum investigating logging in Keo Seima district, also connected to Binh Phuoc, described Sam Ol as a “powerful timber trader” who bought timber from the company and once led a group of armed guards to recover chainsaws seized from loggers by local villagers.

Hak Sophan, administrative director of Mondulkiri Provincial Hall, yesterday declined to comment on the case.

The 10-member committee, which is led by military police commander Sao Sokha, who has been accused of involvement with illegal logging in the past, has overseen raids at severalconcessions and timber warehouses in the past 10 days.

Vietnam congress ‘not likely to affect Cambodia ties’

Vietnam congress ‘not likely to affect Cambodia ties’

vietnam_congress_in_hanoi_21_01_2016_afp

As Vietnam’s Communist Party continues its weeklong congress to choose its general secretary, experts and analysts said the outcome would likely do little to change the historically close relationship between Cambodia and Vietnam’s ruling parties.

Early media reports indicate that Nguyen Phu Trong will run for the post unopposed, though time still remains for another candidate to be named before the congress ends on Wednesday. However, the experts said, even if Hanoi’s most powerful position went to his top challenger, the current reform-minded Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, relations with Phnom Penh would be little affected.

“I don’t see any radical shifts in Vietnamese foreign policy toward the region or Cambodia as a result of the 12th National Congress,” said Paul Chambers, a professor of international relations at Thailand’s Chiang Mai University.

Chambers said that whatever the outcome of the party congress, Vietnam would continue to follow “a policy of balanced proximity” towards regional powers. Specifically, he said, Hanoi would continue “seeking to ensure that Cambodia’s government does not become overly chummy with Beijing”.

China has in recent years become Cambodia’s largest donor of foreign aid as well as its largest foreign investor and provider of military assistance. Meanwhile, Beijing and Hanoi are embroiled in a territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

“Vietnam will continue to use gentle diplomatic pressure to ensure that Hun Sen maintains a policy of general balance between Hanoi and Beijing,” he said, while adding that “the Cambodian military has such close linkages with the Vietnamese military that Hanoi need not worry so much anyway”.

Sebastian Strangio, author of Hun Sen’s Cambodia, agreed with Chambers that balancing China’s influence vis a vis Cambodia would remain a major crux of Vietnamese regional policy, but added that Cambodia would also continue to follow a similar policy of balancing “more powerful countries off each other”.

“The advantage of Chinese support for Hun Sen is that it’s given him a counterbalance against what used to be a smothering Vietnamese relationship,” he said.

Vannarith Chheang, a professor of comparative politics in Southeast Asia at the University of Leeds, said that border disputes would remain a major thorn in the Vietnam-Cambodia relationship, and would likely intensify in the run-up to 2018 Cambodian elections.

“Vietnam will seek to complete the border demarcation as soon as possible,” he said.

Even so, Carlyle Thayer, an expert on Southeast Asia at the University of New South Wales, said that Vietnam “puts a premium on maintaining good relations” with Cambodia. “Generally, as far as Vietnam’s policy towards Cambodia, it will be steady as she goes.”

Cambodians soak up matchplay experience

Cambodians soak up matchplay experience

Cambodian youngsters Leng Sarinreach, 13, and Sam Davith, 11, may have been beaten in their respective second-round matches in Bangkok, but they soaked up a lot of matchplay experience in the process.

The week started on a bright note for Davith and Sarinreach, who both won their first-round matches at the ITF/ATF 14 & Under Development Championships in the Thai capital.

Davith, from Koh Krabei, had to raise his game in a super tie-break to beat Raim Maumoon of the Maldives 6-7, 6-3, 10-8.

Sarinreach, who was competing in the Division II championships for the second year in a row, had no trouble beating Turkmenistan’s Kirill Litwinoy 6-1, 6-0.

After his gruelling first-round match, Davith looked completely out of his depth against top-seeded J Koey of Malaysia. He was unable to win a game in either set.

Despite that loss, Davith got another chance to figure in the compass draw, playing Nepal’s Samryak Bajracharya. He lost 2-6, 1-6 to his 14th seeded Nepalese rival, however, but hopes to do well during the second week.

In his second-round encounter against 12th seeded Mohd Noor Ariffin of Malaysia, Sarinreach was highly competitive, engaging his rival in a three-hour battle.

After being swept off his feet in the first set, Sarinreach began to hit out with confidence and wrested back the second set in a tie-break to drive the match into a decider that stretched all the way to another hard-fought tie-break, with the Cambodian youngster winding up on the wrong side.

This test of endurance took its toll on Sarinreach, who was listless in his back draw tie against Ashensilva Sangarajage of Sri Lanka, who won with ease at 6-1, 6-0.

Meanwhile, the doubles event followed a different pattern. As a way of creating better bonds between players from different countries, the pairings were determined by random selections. Davith was paired with Tamir Ankhbayar of Mongolia, while Sarinreach combined with Chon Lai of Macau. Both pairs were beaten in the first round.

ultramarathon

The Kingdom of Wonder entered the adventurous world of ultramarathons last week with the first ever 128km trail through UNESCO recognised Angkor Wat archaeological complex, putting human emotions through the toughest of endurance tests the likes of which had never been tried before in the country.

At the end of two gruelling days of competition, Hiam Lim Soh of Malaysia took the top honours in 18 hours 34 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of Porter Andrew (18:38.31) of South Africa and Clement Julian (19:28.07) of France.

But from the Cambodian perspective, the greatest achievement was recorded by a Japanese business magnate and well-known sports benefactor Mitsuji Konoshita, who is also a Cambodian citizen. The chairman of the country’s leading hire purchase and motor finance company, GLF, proudly competed as a Cambodian and finished fourth (20 hours 39.55 minutes) in the elite men’s group but was the undisputed winner of the event in his own senior category, giving him the honour of being not only the first from the Kingdom to take part but also pick up a piece of historical glory.

“I was indeed very proud to be a Cambodian. I took up the citizenship two years ago, and it has always been my burning desire to represent Cambodia in an ultramarathon I so passionately involve myself in,” said Mitsuji Konoshita, who had taken part in as many as 11 over-100-mile events last year and has already run two of the kind this year and is heading to two more in the next few months..

Among the first to congratulate Mitsuji Konoshita was the minister for tourism and president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, who described this achievement as a “historical event and one that should inspire every Cambodian. We are so proud of you,” he said.

Later in his address during the medal ceremony, the minister said the introduction of this ultramarathon, which is fast gaining global popularity, was to boost sports tourism and attract more and more adventure-loving foreigners to the Kingdom.

“We are pleased that 250 participants from 26 countries took part this year. It is a great number to begin with. For us the learning curve is long. There may have been some organisational shortfalls in our first attempt but we hope to make this event better when we host it again in January next year,” the NOCC president declared.

In the Women’s 128km event, Thailand’s Boonthant Suksodkeaw outstayed the rest with a timing of 21 hours 27.57 minutes keeping at a fair distances the French pair of Dufour Isabelle and Veyre Auroleia

In the women’s 64km challenge, Ireland’s Haimill Jill, who is no stranger to Cambodian distance events like the half marathons and the fuller version, proved her enormous staying potential by winning the event in six hours and 29 minutes. Australia’s Voseh Kathyrin finished second ahead of Chen Cheng of Singapore.

Interestingly, Jill and Cambodia’s Rio Olympics probable Nary Ly have competed against each other in many local long-distance events with Jill enjoying a better winning record.

Among the men competing the 64km event, R Gregorie of Switzerland proved the one with greater reserves of stamina by winning the event in six hours and 42 minutes, pushing Defond Yann of France to second place and Zwierlein Rob of Australia to the third position.

One young Cambodian girl who showed a lot of courage in finishing the course was given a special award as a promising talent.

The event organised by the Sports Performance Development Organisation (SPDO) was fully supported by the government, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, the Apsara Authority and the Siem Reap Provincial Authority.

Five rights groups yesterday called for United States Secretary of State John Kerry to use avisit to Phnom Penh this week to demand the Cambodian government stop persecuting political opponents and rights, environmental and trade union activists.

Kerry will arrive on Tuesday to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong in a bid to “strengthen” the countries bilateral and economic ties, as well as discuss the premier’s upcoming trip to the US.

An open letter published yesterday, released through human rights umbrella group International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), said any such improvement in relations should be made “contingent” on the government’s progress in promoting democratic reforms and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“We urge you to demand an immediate end to the government’s acts of intimidation, judicial harassment, and violence against opposition officials and the immediate and unconditional release of all 17 opposition members and supporters who are currently detained or imprisoned,” stated the letter, signed by representatives of FIDH, Adhoc, Licadho, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights and the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development.

Government representatives were unavailable yesterday. Ruling party spokesman Sok Eysan declined to comment.

10 Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf

10 Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf

11:16 AM Add Comment
Surfing, a sport also known as “the sport of kings”, seems like an incredibly cool pastime. It originated from Hawaii and even though called a “regal sport” is still mostly associated with chill young men and “hippies”.

Surprisingly, however, it has been a hobby of several unlikely individuals such as Agatha Christie (honestly, can you imagine the author of Poirot and Miss Marple riding a wave? We can’t either, but it’s true!) and Mark Twain. Several others will also leave you surprised.

10. Agatha Christie

Agatha-Christie-Mysterious-Author

Agatha Christie, the famous crime novelist and the creator of legendary characters such as Poirot and Miss Marple, did more than just conjure up “whodunit” stories. Indeed, it is now believed that Christie and her husband, Archie, were one of the first few Britons to try stand up surfing.

After World War I was over, Archie was offered a job to help and organize a world tour to promote ‘The British Empire Exhibition’. Thus, in 1922 Christie and Archie left their child in the caring hands of Christie’s mother and sister and set off for Africa. It was there that they were introduced to prone surfing, a sport that Christie described as “easy” and “great fun”.

Archie’s tour continued and eventually they found themselves in Honolulu. It was there, or rather, in Waikiki, a beachfront neighborhood of Honolulu, that Christie learned how to surf standing up. It wasn’t easy – you had to recognize the right waves and avoid the bad ones, as well as paddle out towards the reef where the waves broke. It was from paddling that Christie developed a strain in her arm that often kept her up at night. Nevertheless, she continued because there was “nothing like that rushing through the water at what seems to you a speed of about two hundred miles an hour….until you arrived, gently slowing down, on the beach, and foundered among the soft, flowing waves”.

It is unknown whether the ‘Queen of Crime’ kept up her new hobby after her return to Britain, but here is to hoping she did!

9. Barack Obama

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Back in 2008 when Obama went back to his home state, Hawaii, he used his vacation time for hitting the beach and the waves! Indeed, like a true surf addict, he inquired about surf conditions right after he got off the plane – “It’s windy out here. Surf’s up?”.

In fact, a video of Obama bodysurfing has been shot which has deeply inspired two Honolulu City Council members. The video has led to their suggestion of renaming the beach after President Obama. So, according to their plan, “Sandy Beach Park” would become “President Barack Obama Sandy Beach Park”.

However, the public reacted negatively and opposed to the proposal, saying that Sandy Beach, as well as other Hawaiian locations, have a lot of historical and cultural meaning and thus their names should not be changed.

Thus, while Obama did not get a beach named after him, it is nice to know that presidents have cool hobbies and a life outside politics!

8. Prince Edward

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
A while ago, rare photographs of Edward VIII surfing emerged and experts say that they are the earliest pictures of a British surfer to ever exist. King Edward VIII, then the Prince of Whales, learned how to surf off Waikiki beach in 1920. Duke Kahanamoku, the legendary Hawaiian surfer and Olympic swimmer, took Edward on an outrigger canoe and then taught him how to surf. Edward, the Prince of Wales, did okay and was hooked on surfing from that moment on.

In fact, he enjoyed surfing so much that he later ordered the royal yacht to turn back so he could enjoy surfing for three more days. Unfortunately, Duke was out of the country but Duke’s brother, David Kahanamoku, took him out into the water and it was then that the rare pictures were taken. According to David Kahanamoku, Edward learned how to surf standing up rather quickly, which is rather impressive, considering that the surfboard he rode was a solid wooden plank with no fins, made from native Hawaiian Koa. It weighed roughly 100 pounds. A replica of this surfboard, as well as pictures of Edward surfing, can be seen at ‘The Museum of British Surfing’ in Devon.

7. Jack London

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
When the accomplished writer, Jack London, arrived in Honolulu in 1907, surfing was a neglected sport, kept alive purely by surf enthusiasts such as George Freeth and Alexander Hume Ford.

Indeed, it was Ford who convinced Jack London to hop on a surfboard. On his second day,London managed to ride prone for some distance and remained in the water for four hours. Nonetheless, he never managed to stand up on his board, and the following day he was confined to his bed as a result of a painful sunburn.

It is obvious that London was very much impressed by surfing. He said it was the “royal sport for the natural kings of earth.” In 1907, that same year he had come to Honolulu, he wrote an account of his experience and entitled it ‘A Royal Sport: Surfing in Waikiki’. It was published in the 1907 edition of ‘The Lady’s Home Companion’ and then re-published later in 1911 in his non-fiction book called ‘The Cruise of the Snark’, which chronicled his sailing adventure across the south Pacific. In this account, he refers to waves “mighty monsters” and to surfing as to “flying through the air, flying forward, flying fast as the surge on which he stands.” London’s account helped to popularize this fascinating sport.

6. Mark Twain

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Mark Twain, the famous author behind ‘Tom Sawyer’ and ‘Huckleberry Finn’, was one of the first few Americans to publish an account on surfing. And of course, in the process of observing and writing, he surfed himself.

Twain was 30 years old and working for the ‘Sacramento Union’ newspaper as a travel correspondent when he went to Kona Coast in Hawaii. It was there that he observed the natives and recorded his thoughts on the matter.

And it was also there that he tried surfing too – “I tried surf-bathing once, subsequently, but made a failure of it. I got the board placed right, and at the right moment, too; but missed the connection myself. The board struck the shore in three-quarters of a second, without any cargo, and I struck the bottom about the same time, with a couple of barrels of water in me.” While it is obvious that Twain’s failure put him slightly off surfing, his descriptions of the sport (and of a wipeout) are spot-on.

Twain’s articles for the ‘Sacramento Union’ newspaper were collected into his 1872 travelogue called ‘Roughing It’. It was in this book that his paragraph on surfing landed.

5. Dennis Wilson

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Dennis Wilson, the drummer of ‘The Beach Boys’ was in actual fact, the only one of the whole band to surf (LINK 14). Indeed, he was the one to encourage other members of the band to write about the sport, seeing as surfing was getting cool.

Wilson seemed to know lots about surfing and the best beaches to catch the best waves. In one of his interviews he says that – “September is good for the South; Hawaii is good from November until January; the West Coast is good in June; Australia’s good in January…”. As for the perfect waves – they had to have just the right speed, shape and size.

Wilson drowned in 1983 (not from surfing!) and was buried at sea.

Recently, Wilson’s surfboard was on sale on eBay for $100,000. It has since been sold. The backstory of the surfboard can also be found on the eBay page. According to it, sometime in the 1970s, Wilson gave the board to his good friend Louis Marotta who kept the board in his garage. However, in 1985 he gave the board to his close friend Bob Stafford, who was a huge fan of ‘The Beach Boys’. Bob passed away recently and thus the board passed onto his son Brian, who was named after Brian Wilson and who was selling the board.

Wilson’s surfboard was forever preserved in the band’s 1962 debut album ‘Surfin’ Safari’ as well as their third album ‘Surfer Girl’.

4. Prince William

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Prince William’s first time hitting the waves was back in 1993, when he was still a child. He later surfed with his friends in Scotland in 2004 as well as Portugal. In fact, the sport means so much to Prince William that it was part of his bachelor party in 2011.

As well as that, Prince William and Prince Harry went body boarding together in Cornwall in 2012 while William’s wife, Duchess Kate, watched Andy Murray’s Wimbledon match. Prince William got off from attending the match by saying that he had an “existing commitment”.

Indeed, it seems that Prince William loves surfing so it is not at all surprising that his baby boy, Prince George, was gifted his first ever surfboard while on his visit to Australia with his parents. The board was commissioned by the Mayor of Manly Jean Hay and is valued at $2,200. Prince William said that he would love to surf the waves there and perhaps one day he will do just that (with his son!)

3. Prince Charles

Prince Charles and Lady Diana
Another royal surfer, Prince Charles, was supposedly first introduced to surfing on a royal trip to Australia. Recently, however, photographs of the then 20 year old prince surfing at Constantine Bay have been unearthed. They have been donated to the Museum of British Surfing by Phil Taylor, a surfer who originally took the pictures. They have been taken sometime between 1970 and 1973.

Apparently, back in the day, Prince Charles did not know the surfing etiquette very well and would often drop in on other surfers in the water, thus angering them in the process.

Soon after the photographs were taken, Prince Charles became patron of the British Surfing Association. And in 1978, he even went so far as to host the British surfing team at the Buckingham Palace before they set off for the World Championship in South Africa. Prince Charles has not surfed in a long time now, however, but perhaps one day he will decide to hit the beach again (and show us his improved surfing etiquette!).

2. Adolph Spreckels

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Adolph Spreckels was Clark Gable’s stepson. His mother married Gable when Spreckels was five years old. Spreckels was heir to the Spreckels Sugar fortune and his Great Grandfather was a sugar baron. Spreckels was said to be a reincarnated Hawaiian prince by the keepers of island lore, known as Old Kahunas.

Soon after Gable died, Spreckels first learned how to surf in Waikiki. He was an uncontrollable teenager and was once cut off from his family fortune. However, he soon benefited from a multi-million dollar inheritance and in the early 70’s it was believed that he possessed more surfboards than anyone else in the world.

In 1969 he helped invent an almost universal feature found on short boards called the “down” rail. As well as that, he was one of the first men to ride the waves at Backdoor Pipeline in Hawaii, which were considered extremely dangerous. Nonetheless, his easy lifestyle got to him and he died of a drug overdose at the age of twenty seven.

1. ‘Mad’ Jack Churchill

Famous People You Didn’t Know Could Surf
Jack Churchill, or “Mad Jack”, has to be not only one of the most fascinating surfers out there, but also the most fascinating man, to ever live. He was the only soldier to kill his enemies with arrows shot from a crossbow. He was awarded the Yugoslavian Partisan Star as well as the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross for his war efforts. Later, he got rid of his arrows and rode into battle playing pipes. His favorite tune to play was “Will Ye No Come Back Again?”.

In fact, it was this song he played when the Nazis knocked him down with a grenade blast. It is believed that they thought Jack Churchill was a relative of Winston Churchill and thus instead of killing him decided to send him to Berlin for interrogation. It was of course found he had no links to Churchill and he was sent to a concentration camp. He escaped the camp and attempted to walk 125 miles through German territory to the Baltic Sea. He was caught near the shore and brought to a different camp. There, he escaped yet again during a power outage and walked about 100 miles surviving on vegetables he cooked in a stolen rusted can.

As if his war adventures were not enough, in 1955 Churchill decided to surf the tidal Severn Bore near Gloucester. He surfed it on 16ft Australian-style surfboard he had previously made himself and which he towed behind his motorcycle.

Witnesses to this mad act were convinced that the oncoming waves would drown Churchill, as they often drowned stray farm animals. They tried to convince him to give way but he could not be swayed. He laughed looking at them, and said, “I will be all right”.

He rode the Severn Bore for over a mile and was the first man to do it.
